On June 19, 2024, representatives from Georgian civil society, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia (MEPA), the Georgian Parliament, and the public sector convened to discuss potential policy options for the permanent reduction of N2O emissions from nitric acid production in Georgia. This focus group meeting, held in Tbilisi, aimed to gather insights on a policy study conducted by the NACAG teams from Georgia and Germany.
During the meeting, participants evaluated the feasibility and effectiveness of various policy measures, including emission limits, financial incentives, carbon pricing mechanisms, and voluntary approaches, within the Georgian context. These discussions were framed around enhancing Georgia’s climate ambitions while simultaneously promoting economic growth.
The study and the focus group meeting are part of NACAG’s policy advisory efforts to the Georgian Government on sustainable N2O abatement and the fulfillment of the Statement of Undertaking (SoU). In March 2020, the Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia officially signed the SoU. Following this, the nitric acid plant operator Rustavi Azot became eligible for NACAG funding. In June 2024, after a successful international tender, a contract for monitoring equipment was signed with the company SICK. Currently, the tender for N2O abatement technology is ongoing.
