On June 21st, NACAG signed a Grant Agreement with KEMAPCO® Arab Fertilizers & Chemicals Industries Ltd, a prominent producer of nitric acid based in Aqaba, Jordan. KEMAPCO®, boasting production facilities established in 1999, is strategically situated in close proximity to Jordan’s primary port.
The core objective of this agreement is to procure and install advanced N2O abatement and monitoring equipment. The significant investment will contribute greatly to reducing emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O), a potent greenhouse gas. The estimated mitigation potential of the nitric acid plants exceeds 145,000 CO2 equivalents, equivalent to emissions from approximately 100,000 round trips for an individual traveling between Berlin and Amman.
The signing of the Grant Agreement was made possible due to the Government of Jordan’s unwavering commitment to fostering permanent climate-friendly nitric acid production and transforming the sector. Notably, Jordan has already included emissions from the nitric acid sector in its latest Nationally Determined Contributions, further underscoring its dedication to addressing environmental concerns.
This combined dedication from both the industry and the government marks a significant milestone in the global industrial transformation towards sustainable practices.
